20 per cent of homeowners in search of flatmate

One in five homeowners would consider having someone rent a spare room to help pay the mortgage, a new poll by PRDnationwide has found.

The poll, which recently surveyed more than 1,500 homeowners from across the country, said 14 per cent of respondents already had someone renting a room and a further 15 per cent would if they had the space.

“Having someone contributing $100 a week to rent a spare room could be the difference of struggling with bills or not,” PRDnationwide research director Jonathan Rivera said.

However, more than 50 per cent opted to keep their privacy, saying they would not consider having someone rent a spare room to help pay the mortgage.
