In a fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Australia, community donations and the agency’s generosity doubled the expected amount raised.
Richard Matthews Real Estate had initially planned to match the donations its team was able to solicit from community members, with the hope of being able to contribute $10,000 to the cause.
After the company witnessed its professionals’ hard work in bringing in $6,105 through a fundraising morning tea as well as five auction events held across Sydney’s inner west and south-west, they decided to increase the corporate contribution to $13,895, bringing the total to $20,000 raised.
The donations were collected in the lead-up to World Ovarian Cancer Day, which coincided with Mother’s Day on 8 May.
For agency director Richard Baini, the symbolism of being able to contribute to that cause on such a significant day struck close to his heart.
“Having lost my mother to this deadly disease I have seen the impact it has on those going through it as well as their family and friends,” Mr Baini said.
He particularly highlighted the generosity of the community in digging deep for the important cause.
“We are blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people who have contributed a huge $6,105 to our ovarian cancer fundraiser. This is something that means a lot to me personally and Matthew and I have agreed to match every donation dollar for dollar with a little extra, bringing our total money raised to $20,000,” he said.
The firm also hopes that this work will raise awareness of the warning signs of ovarian cancer, which often goes undetected until it has progressed to later stages.
“Ovarian cancer characteristically has little to know symptoms in the early stages, making detection difficult and awareness essential,” they noted.
Some symptoms to be aware of include increased abdominal size or persistent bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full after eating a small amount and needing to urinate often or urgently.
The funds collected by the team from the community and company will go toward vital high-impact research, crucial awareness campaigns, information sessions, online support and empowering resilience kits.
Matthew Everingham, auctioneer and director at Richard Matthews, noted that fundraising was an important facet of the team’s operations.
“Off the back of having just raised $20k for Beyond Blue, our team is committed to [continuing to] raise funds for much needed causes”.
