Ahead of National Safe Work Month, SafeWork NSW is reminding businesses of the importance of safety and wellbeing for all staff members.

SafeWork NSW head Natasha Mann is urging businesses across the state to commit to building a safe and healthy workplace.

She believes a conversation with a cup of tea in person or online is “a great place to start”.

“The way we work has changed the past couple of years and our safety and wellbeing has never been more important,” she said.

Highlighting that every workplace has risks, Ms Mann said that “no job should be unsafe, and no death or injury is acceptable”.

“This October is the perfect time to look at your workplace, understand the risks and make simple changes to improve safety because a safe and healthy workplace benefits everyone,” she said.

To do this, Ms Mann is encouraging all businesses — from accounting firms to real estate businesses and construction sites — to host a “SafeTea” event at their workplace.

“Grab a cuppa, gather your team, and start an important conversation about health and safety at work,” she advised.

SafeWork NSW has a myriad of resources available to the rental, hiring and real estate services sector to arm businesses and employers with the tools and information they require to ensure a safe workplace, which can be accessed here.

According to the government department, there are a number of risks associated with the sector — from the significant amount of sedentary and administrative work to movement between workplaces and into often unfamiliar environments.

SafeWork has flagged lifting and moving heavy objects, slips, trips and falls, being hit by moving objects and electric shock as the most common causes of workplace injury in the sector.

Common hazards also include the carrying out of sedentary work and workplace stress.
