Obligatory job updates to the family often occur over the phone or at the occasional dinner. But for this father and son, there’s no need.

Steve and Darren McGowan are both principals at Harcourts Coastside Property; Darren is also Steve’s son.

While “blood is thicker than water”, it can also be messier. It’s hard to imagine two relatives, who at one point lived in the same household, getting along 100 per cent of the time in the office.

However, it is these differing but complementary focuses on the business that allows Harcourts Coastside to make the most of its cross-generational knowledge and property management expertise, according to the principals.

Father and licensee Steve McGowan is said to bring a down-to-earth and engaged demeanour into the Erina team, with over 30 years of experience under his belt.

Comparatively, sales manager and son Darren McGowan pivoted into property management in 2015. He is always attuned to online market trends and is a confident communicator to both buyers and sellers.

The McGowans both bring contrasting qualities to the Central Coast team but share the same vision of connecting with local markets.

“A lot of real estate offices talk about how they are like a family. With Harcourts Coastside, this really is a real family!” commented Harcourts NSW chief executive Katrina Tarrant.

“And the not-so-secret special ingredient is, of course, Cherie!”

Cherie Nelson, who first partnered with the McGowans in business back in the early 2000s, takes on the property manager role in the Harcourts Coastside business.

“Back when we opened, the team was just three of us. To look at how that team has grown and evolved over the years, it makes me proud of what we have achieved together and excited for the future ahead,” Mr McGowan senior explained.

With their recent rebranding, Steve, Darren and Cherie said that their partnering with Harcourts was an “easy” choice.

“Harcourts is a real estate company run by real estate people. Their values and goals aligned perfectly with who we are as a team, where we want to be and how we want to service our local area,” Mr McGowan senior said.

“Our team is made up of born and bred Central Coast people — we live and breathe this community.”

Ms Nelson and this father-son team recently had their official opening as Harcourts Coastside Property, with no plans of looking back.

“We’ve built this office into a strong local business, taking care of our clients but also giving back to our community,” Mr McGowan senior concluded.
