The territory’s leading real estate body has appointed a new chief executive following the departure of Michelle Tynan back in October.

Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT) president Hannah Gill has announced that Maria Edwards will take on the CEO role.

Expressing delight at welcoming Ms Edwards into the role, Ms Gill said it was “an extensive and detailed recruitment process”.

“It was clear Maria demonstrated the diversity of skills and experience required to support the continued work and success of the REIACT and our members,” the president stated.

“Maria has actively participated in the REIACT’s advocacy work at both a national and local level, as a REIACT board member, demonstrating her commitment and insight to guide the REIACT’s policy positions and representation into the future.”

According to the institute, Ms Edwards will officially join the REIACT on 9 January 2023.

Detailing Ms Edwards’ career to date, the REIACT shared that the incoming CEO commenced her real estate career back in 2006.

She comes to the REIACT from her role as business development manager at Canberra’s HomeGround Real Estate.

“Maria brings a broad understanding of both the private, affordable and community housing sectors across the ACT and a genuine commitment to supporting effective and collaborative relationships throughout her career. Maria has won multiple industry awards both locally and nationally and holds a diploma in leadership and management, is a licensed real estate agent in the ACT and NSW, along with completing a certificate IV in property services,” a statement reported.

Expressing her gratitude at her appointment, Ms Edwards said: “The CEO role is, for me, the perfect opportunity to utilise my experience and truly represent our members; having walked in their shoes for many years, I understand the challenges faced by our sector.

“I look forward to working with the board, agencies, community housing providers, industry stakeholders and the government to implement practical solutions through meaningful consultation and advocacy — I cannot wait to get started.”

According to the REIACT, the appointment of Ms Edwards “marks an exciting new chapter for the institute”.

“The REIACT board are looking forward to working with Maria to support the institute’s continue success, our members and build recognition of our industry and its contribution to the ACT economy and community,” it shared.
