Carlton captain and winner of the AFL’s most prestigious honour in 2022, Patrick Cripps, has shared his insights and the attitudes he believes are key to success both on the field and at an open home.
Speaking at Stockdale & Leggo’s 2023 Momentum seminar last week, the experienced midfielder illuminated a host of key habits he’s implemented throughout his footballing career and believes have enabled his success.
Mr Cripps outlined several non-negotiables for breeding success, including possessing a positive mindset, remaining highly focused, and reflecting consistently on the positive and negative aspects of performance.
Revealing that he often embarks on “a lot of deep, self-reflection,” the Carlton man ratified his belief that these actions invite individuals to “decide what [they] want to stand for and the actions and behaviours [they] accept.”
He insisted, “You have to have a value set you want to live by.”
Mr Cripps also declared it paramount that individuals in leadership positions “take time to think.”
A weekly occurrence in Mr Cripps’ life and a practice he enjoys is visualisation, which he undergoes in a floatation or sensory deprivation tank and which allows him to “think about what I need to do [for the week ahead].”
“I visualise different parts of the game,” he said. According to him, it’s this thinking habit that allows him to “feel like I have control.”
When questioned on his advice for real estate agents facing constant, daily waves of pressure to perform, the reigning Brownlow medallist conceded, “It’s tough.”
Returning to the importance of principles, he explained that “from a performance point of view, you’ve got to have a set of standards and a standard to celebrate a challenge.”
Much like AFL stars, real estate agents face constant pressure from the opposition, whether it be in the shape of fellow agents competing within their market, rising interest rates, razor-thin vacancy rates, a downturning market, or reduced vendor confidence.
When faced with a consistent barrage of headwinds, the Carlton captain stressed the importance of staying in your lane and “focusing on what you can control, and what you want to bring and then identifying your strengths.”
“So, I focus on if I do all the work, I have the confidence that we are the best and don’t worry about the others. You try to water down their strengths and make sure you are doing the right thing and have the right habits,” he said.
“Then you back yourself in over anyone else,” Mr Cripps offered.
And when you do win, you take stock of and celebrate “important successes.”
Fundamentally, Mr Cripps believes everything — whether it’s on the football field or in a real estate agency — can be built upon a foundation of “caring for those around you and making a connection.”
“If you want to challenge someone, you challenge them with care,” he advised.
