The quietening market is creating a lot of fear making it more important than ever for leaders to demonstrate bravery and moral courage - a key theme at Rise Leadership Awakenings.
“The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.” This landmark quote from the 2016 Australian of the Year, Lt General David Morrison articulated how when we turn a blind eye to bad behaviour, we degrade ourselves by lowering our own standards to that of the person behaving inappropriately.
As property markets across the country ease, there’s a lot of fear rising in real estate. Fear of lower commissions, results that are weaker than last year, anxiety about how long it is going to last and the workload in front of us all to ‘get it back to normal’. And fear can make people do crazy things.
So now more than ever, it’s time for leaders to be brave, says Rise Initiative president, John Cunningham.
“It’s an important time to lean into conversations that are difficult, tackle behaviour that is unacceptable and reflect on what we’re avoiding, why and how we can address it,” John said.
“Being brave is not about an absence of fear. It’s about doing what’s right even though you know it will be difficult, and even when you’re scared or anxious about it and being committed to dealing with the consequences. We need a lot more brave leaders in Australian real estate.”
The Rise Leadership Awakenings conference - to be held in Sydney on March 26-28 - features an agenda packed with leaders who role model bravery in a myriad of different ways. These include:
The Honorable Michael Kirby AC, CMG
As Australia’s longest-serving high court judge, Michael Kirby knows what it means to be right, especially when it is not popular. His dissenting judgments are famous for being on the wrong side of the majority, but on the right side of history. As a highly decorated human rights champion, professor and international jurist with appointments across several UN missions, Michael’s wisdom and experience inspires leaders to be decisive, ethical and inclusive.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan
Gill McLachlan took a deeply traditional and entrenched industry and transformed it to become a modern and connected culture leading strongly despite setbacks along the way. In his heart-to-heart session, Gill will discuss the power of vision, diversity, discipline, bravery and resilience and the role of leaders in building trust and creating connected communities at every level of the business - not just for game day.
Dr Lucy Hone
Leading international authority on wellbeing and resilience, Dr Lucy Hone was voted one of the Top 20 TED speakers in 2020. The best-selling author also has lived experience in personal grief, trauma, resilience and bravery, having lost her 12-year-old daughter in a car accident. Dr Hone explores the difference between stress and burnout and offers strategies on how to create a brave culture that manages stress effectively.
Chanel Contos
Chanel Contos founded and led the Teach Us Consent campaign making consent education mandatory in all Australian schools after a landmark online campaign that highlighted how normalised sexual violence had become amongst the teen population. She is also the inaugural Director of the Centre for Sex and Gender equality at the Australia Institute. Having worked in both residential and commercial real estate, Chanel will discuss how we need to have braver conversations in the workplace around consent.
Ewan Morton, Charlotte Pascoe and John Cunningham, with Sherrie Storor
When we turn a blind eye to disruptive behaviour in our teams, we send the signal that we support it. Sherrie Storor leads this panel with industry leaders Ewan Morton (Morton RE), Charlotte Pascoe (Stockdale & Leggo) and John Cunningham (Cunningham RE) who discuss their moments of truth in facing up to toxic behaviour within their teams and how they leaned in to transform it.
This two-day and two-evening event promises an extraordinary lineup of speakers that will support you to be a braver leader, while also giving you access to incredible networking opportunities with some of the real estate industry’s top thought leaders.
