A question that’s often asked in real estate is what does it take to be the best? Is it determination, a relentless work ethic, or a never-give-up attitude?
We’ve all heard the stories and seen the case studies of what it takes to “be the best”, and it can be both awe inspiring and intimidating — courtesy of a narrative that often revolves around sacrifice.
The truth is, “being the best” isn’t as tough, dramatic or as high-stakes as some would have you believe.
It’s actually very, very simple and I’ll tell you why.
You can’t just want it
To be the best, it’s not just a matter of wanting it. You need to be obsessed with being the best.
But that doesn’t mean you need to work ridiculous hours, sacrificing your work/life balance and giving up everything else in the pursuit of perfection.
Instead, it involves the simple strategy of learning to focus.
Being the best occurs one action at a time, but it also involves understanding exactly what action needs to be undertaken when.
What should you be doing?
Being good at real estate isn’t rocket science, but it does involve a clear understanding of the tasks that need to be completed as a matter of priority.
These include:
-
Marketing yourself
-
Staying in touch with your database
-
Following up when you say you will
-
Providing timely and authentic customer service that allows you to stand out from the crowd
It’s not complicated. It’s not all-consuming. It’s about clearly understanding what you need to do each moment and each day of a successful real estate career.
And each of these actions has three key purposes:
-
To generate a future listing (prospecting)
-
To provide an update on a current listing, including price repositioning or property feedback (negotiating)
-
To get a “yes” in a sales negotiation (closing)
See, it’s not hard, but it does involve knowing what to prioritise, when, and then bringing your very best to that activity.
Earning the title of being ‘the best’
If your ambition is to be the best, it’s about learning to focus and doing the one most important thing that you should be doing at any point in time. Then it’s a matter of doing it.
When you finish that important thing, move on to the next, and then the next.
The obsession with wanting to be the best is a way to prioritise what you are doing; “obsession” in this context is interrelated with discipline.
It’s about not falling for the trap of doing the easy stuff, just getting through the day, “thinking” that you are achieving something, or allowing distractions to interrupt your flow.
Or worse, still putting something off and telling yourself: “It’s okay, I’ll do it tomorrow.”
Tomorrow is too late!
Little actions lead to a big career
Our best days are made up of small actions that create results. A series of best days lead to best years that compound into successful and rewarding real estate careers.
So, I challenge you to do the following: get obsessed with being the best. Each day, take note of what you are focused on and become obsessed with “that one thing.”
Make each part of your day count. That’s how you earn the title of being the best.
