While structure and productivity have played a major role in Alexander Phillips remaining Australia’s top agent for the best part of a decade, the Sydney agent revealed recuperation and personal time have been critical to his sustained success.
Following confirmation of his position at the peak of the Australian real estate industry by the 2023 REB Top 100 Agents ranking, the Phillips Pantzer Donnelley agent revealed to real estate coach and trainer Tom Panos and REB’s managing editor, Phil Tarrant, his extremely regimented days.
Explaining how each day “like clockwork”, he’s in his Coogee office in Sydney’s eastern suburbs by 6:30am, and making phone calls by 7:30am, he revealed the mornings are when he gets most of his work done in his “very structured day.”
By 5:30pm, before many have even hopped on a train or motorway, Mr Phillips is home, although this time is not exclusively dedicated to his personal life as he “might be sending emails or doing something”.
All-in-all, he believes he doesn’t work “super long hours”.
And while many may disagree with his position and grimace at the thought of undertaking a similar working schedule, which facilitated Mr Phillips achieving 214 sales last year at over $860 million in value, he explained this day-to-day schedule doesn’t occupy him for the entirety of the year.
“My year’s done in chunks,” he said.
“The chunks I do are through the roof. It’s 100 per cent intensity where I think most agents are working at 50 per cent.”
Mr Phillips, who recently returned from a two-week European holiday and is gearing for another six-week trip in just under a month, shared his belief that while, on face value, he and his office work “less” each year — 40 weeks versus the standard 50 weeks — completely stepping away from work for this time is the superpower guiding him to his industry-leading stature.
“Those guys [other agents] work 50 weeks a year, and we’re still ahead, just because we rejuvenate ourselves so regularly,” he said.
On top of his emphasis on rest and re-energising himself in an industry that, particularly in the last 18 months, has been riddled with chaos and stress, REB’s top-ranked agent for 2023 revealed gratitude and passion for his work, which allowed him to push through his weeks of maximum intensity.
“The main thing is — which I’m lucky to have [and] which a lot of people don’t with the way they work — is I actually love what I do. I don’t see it as a chore. I go to bed at night, I sleep well, I get up; it doesn’t stress me,” he said.
“It’s just a way of life to me in many ways, [and] I’m very lucky to be surrounded by the best team.”
