Another big week of auctions has volume watchers wondering if spring has come early, or if the last weeks of winter are indicating an even bigger than usual selling season as the weather warms.

With 2,377 homes currently scheduled to hit the block, this week is set to overtake last week’s 2,037 as the combined capital's busiest since early April, when 2,687 homes went up for auction.

This marks the third consecutive weekly rise in auction numbers with a 16.7 increase over last week’s numbers. It’s also a substantial increase on the dampened numbers from this time last year, when weaker selling conditions saw 2,006 properties under the hammer.

Melbourne is set to be top dog this week, with 1,069 or just under half of the auction events set to take place in the Victorian capital. It’s a whopping 27.1 per cent higher than the 841 homes auctioned last week and 28.5 per cent above the 832 seen this time last year.

Like Melbourne, Sydney will see its busiest week since early April with 962 homes up for auction. But the NSW capital’s figures aren’t quite as dramatic as those from the south, as it records a 17.6 per cent increase from last week’s 818 auctions and a 23.5 per cent rise from this time last year.

The smaller capitals buck the trend, with Brisbane’s 126 scheduled auctions marking an -8.5 per cent decrease over last week, Canberra down 7.7 per cent to 84 auctions, and Perth dropping to 11 homes under the hammer, from 16 the week prior.

Adelaide, however, is set to experience a moderate rise with a 7.8 per cent increase to 125 auctions.

Next week’s figures are expected to remain steady, with just shy of 2,400 capital city auctions currently scheduled.
