Leaders in the industry look to bring mental health out of the shadows with free resources for real estate professionals.
It will come as no surprise to real estate professionals that many in the industry struggle with stress. With R U OK? Day taking place on 14 September, there’s never been a better time to talk about the challenges facing property professionals and how the industry can help.
Tanja Lee, who runs the real estate-centred personal and professional coaching business, The Alchemic Way, took to LinkedIn recently to share some thoughts ahead of the mental health awareness day, noting that it can still be too easy for real estate professionals to “suffer in silence”.
“Too many of us are actually not okay and no one would even know,” Ms Lee shared of her experience in real estate.
Ponting to a recent research by Domain, she noted that at least 90 per cent of real estate personnel say they experience stress and 60 per cent say that equates to mental health issues.
“That’s a lot of people,” Ms Lee commented.
Ms Lee’s partner in coaching and in life, who goes by Dr Matt, agreed, noting that the impact of this stress and anxiety can be severe.
“For me, working in healthcare for over 20 years as a complementary healthcare provider, I’ve seen enough of what mental health degradation does to us not just mentally but also that it becomes physical,” Dr Matt said.
The duo have taken the opportunity of R U OK? Day to shed light on industry resources that are not only tailored to the specific issues endemic in real estate, but that are also free to take advantage of.
- The Real Care app from RiSE, which is a free support tool containing tips, tools and advice created by real estate professionals for real estate professionals.
- Three free counselling sessions by qualified psychologists, thanks to Domain, for all members. The listings portal is extending its employee support program in recognition that healthy professionals foster a healthy industry.
- Actively participating in R U OK? Day. This official site contains lots of resources that are available for those seeking support as well as looking to provide help to their friends, family, workplaces or community.
- Contact Tanja Lee or Dr Matt on their platforms. They’ll be tailoring their messages ahead of and after R U OK? Day to address the biggest challenges real estate professionals are facing right now.
“What I know for sure as a peak performance coach is that many of you in the industry may be suffering in silence, too scared to talk to the people that you work with or your colleagues or your boss, and not wanting to take pressure of your profession home to your family, your kids or the ones that you love,” Ms Lee commented of the reasons many professionals still shy away from discussing their challenges.
“But that means that you’re sitting there in the mess and the morass of the day-to-day grind, needing a raft.”
These resources, she said, could be the gateway to getting necessary help.
“Life’s too short to let the weight of the world weigh us down, especially when there is so much free help from those devoted to the elevation, health and wellbeing of humanity,” Ms Lee said.
