A Northern Beaches agency’s creative exhibition space will soon put up a platform for a local artist’s ceramics creations.
For Avalon Beach agents Amy and Matthew Young, community connection is at the heart of what they do. For the last two years, the married principals of Laing+Simmons Young Property have facilitated local creatives through their non-profit gallery space, The Studio.
Located by the quiet water of Avalon’s Careel Bay Marina, the hybrid office and art space was founded during the pandemic. Now, the agency will continue to celebrate local artists as they get set for their next exhibition: a display of work by homegrown ceramicist Caressa Gonsalves.
A Palm Beach local, the young artist has spent her life deeply immersed in the community. The Gonsalves boat shed, a small fisherman’s shack and local institution, was founded by her own family.
Now, Ms Gonsalves is getting ready to launch her newest exhibition at The Studio. Titled Motion of the Deep, the exhibit will lay bare her “soul-deep connection” to the ocean and its ability to provide her with solace as she processes powerful emotions.
“I use the vessel as a canvas to explore and express the waves of emotion,” Ms Gonsalves said.
As a not-for-profit initiative, The Studio does not take a gallery commission. Instead, a percentage of sales will be donated directly to Variety, the Children’s Charity.
“We’re immensely humbled by the way people have adopted The Studio as their own space to relax, learn and be inspired, helping us support many important causes along the way,” Ms Young said.
“Interacting with Caressa’s work is an emotional experience,” she shared. “We’re thrilled to showcase her incredible work as the next artist at The Studio.”
In the past, The Studio has supported a variety of charitable causes, including Living Ocean, Dreams2Live4 and Sea Shepherd Australia.
Ms Gonsalves’ ceramics exhibition will be open to view at The Studio from November 2023.
