Agent Ben Pike knows that physical and mental wellbeing is one of his greatest business assets.

As the real estate sector begins to slow down for the Christmas break, many agents across Australia find themselves at a loose end. Used to a 24/7 grind, it can be tempting for agents to spend the holidays scrolling through emails.

But Ben Pike, principal of Pulse Property Agents in South Sydney, knows that caving in to this anxiety will ultimately harm his business, not help it.

“Burnout is common in the industry and I think it’s something that all sales agents experience at some point throughout their career,” Mr Pike said.

At times, he admits that high workloads are unavoidable – after all, clients “are selling their most prized asset and it’s a big journey for all of those that are involved”.

Nevertheless, Mr Pike advised agents to “make self-care a priority”.

“This includes getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and incorporating exercise into your routine,” said Mr Pike, noting that wellbeing is “essential for sustained productivity”.

As well as these quotidian forms of self-care, Mr Pike makes sure to have a “good break” every quarter around public holiday periods, so that he can take time to recharge and spend quality time with his young family.

It’s a strategy that has clearly been paying off for Mr Pike, who ranked number 23 in REB’s Top 100 Agents for 2023. Nine years ago, Mr Pike made the major decision to start up his own independent agency in Miranda, and he now heads a team of 27 – not including Hugo, the office’s canine director of happiness.

“I always knew that I would start my own agency,” Mr Pike said. “For me, failure was never an option. The hardest but most exciting part was backing myself and taking on the biggest risk of my life.”

For agents who dream of starting up their own real estate agency one day, Mr Pike advises them to “back yourself and stay hungry”.

“If you are prepared to put in the hard work, dedication and stay motivated, the investment will pay off,” he promised.

As Mr Pike and the Pulse Property team look forward to 2024, Mr Pike shared that he plans to take time out over the break to reflect on the past year and make plans for growth over the next 12 months.

“At the start of every year I look back on the year that was,” he said. “There will always be ups and downs but they are learning experiences, and they make you a better person and a better agent.”

“I continue to push myself and my team, to set goals that almost seem unattainable. Every year we move the dial and push the limits, and every year we outperform and grow together. It’s exciting being part of the journey with such an amazing team,” he said.

As Mr Pike looks forward to 2024, he concluded that there is just one word on his real estate bucket list: “growth”.
