Six finalists battled it out at this year’s final as “contestants reach new heights of quality”.

Designed as a platform for the state’s would-be and up-and-coming auctioneers to try their hand at auctioneering, 2024’s Novice Auctioneers Competition (NAC) run by the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW) saw 37-year-old Michael Rebetzke from Menck White emerge victorious among six finalists.

Rebetzke worked alongside Clarence White at the Menck White team in rapidly learning skills such as numerical training, managing increments and negotiating single-bidder auctions in preparation for the competition.

While the initial heats of the competition see participants auctioning a luxury item of their choice, this year marked the fifth in a row wherein participants were given an actual property to auction off in the final round; this year being a four-bedroom rural property in Cooranbong which sold for $1,132,000.

REINSW auctioneer chapter committee chairperson and competition compère, Ricky Briggs, emphasised his awe at the auctioneers in the final rounds, stating “each year, we witness contestants reaching new heights of quality”.

“One of our best contestants today is just 17 years old. While he didn’t cinch the victory, it highlights the calibre of budding auctioneers preparing to enter the industry,” Briggs noted.

Rebetzke similarly echoed this sentiment about the high standard of this year’s competitors.

“All the competitors have been outstanding, and I don’t know how I won … sheer fluke. I feel a bit emotional to be honest. Winning means the world to me after putting in so much work.”

Rebetzke was additionally emphatic about the importance of the competition, citing the amount of time dedicated towards running them.

“It’s tremendous that everyone, especially the seniors, dedicates their time to running this competition.”

“Ricky Briggs’ training sessions have been magnificent. I’m at the foot of the mountain, but the REINSW members auctioneers give you such a leg up and so much help with training. I’m very appreciative and grateful,” remarked Rebetzke.

Briggs is optimistic about the competition’s capacity to generate fully fledged auctioneers.

“This competition serves as the epitome, the breeding ground for those truly committed to advancing their careers in auctioneering, and we look forward to seeing these individuals progress through the ranks,” he concluded.
