The Real Estate Institute of Western Australia (REIWA) has launched its annual event to collect sleeping bags for Western Australians doing it tough this winter.

From Monday, 27 May, to Wednesday, 26 June, participating agencies will be collecting donations of new and freshly laundered sleeping bags and blankets for The Salvation Army to then give to those in need.

Including REIWA House and the Salvation Army headquarters in Northbridge, there will be 26 collection points across the Perth metropolitan area in addition to regional collection points located in Dunsborough and Beverley.

With the initiative being part of REIWA’s Community REInvest philanthropic program, REIWA CEO Cath Hart stated that REIWA and its members are pleased to partner with the Salvation Army to bring warmth and comfort to Western Australians experiencing hardship.

“The Sleeping Bag Appeal is one of the ways REIWA members help those in need and support the incredible work of The Salvation Army,” Hart said.

“WA’s real estate industry knows just how vital it is for people to have a roof over their head and a safe place to call home. Sadly, for the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in our state, this is not a reality,” she continued.

Salvation Army Western Australia public relations secretary Warren Palmer relayed that the gift of a sleeping bag or blanket is capable of making a huge difference to someone’s life.

“Right now, hundreds of Western Australians are facing the incredibly difficult decision about where they can safely sleep when all other options have been exhausted,” Palmer shared.

“Tents, cars, overcrowded dwellings and rough sleeping have unfortunately become the only viable option for many, when they should never have to resort to this.”

“A gift as simple as a sleeping bag could be the one thing that helps carry a family or individual to a day where new beginnings are possible,” he added.

Collection points include First National Druitt Saunders, Naked Edge Real Estate, Mark Hay Realty Group, and LJ Hooker Kalamunda and Foothills, among others. All the locations can be found on REIWA’s website. Anyone able to make a monetary donation is encouraged to contribute directly to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal.
