It’s all too easy to find a groove, settle into the comfort zone, and then wonder why the results we hope for aren’t coming our way.

But the comfort zone isn’t where greatness lives. It’s not the place where you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of pushing your own limits, or where you’ll size up a hurdle and enjoy the victory of surmounting it.

True growth and fulfilment happens outside of the comfort zone, not within it. But too often we settle into a comfortable space and place in the mistaken belief it’s easier; it’s not.

When you languish in the comfort zone, you limit yourself, and that limiting behaviour won’t serve you in the long term.

In fact there’s a good chance it will work against you, ensuring you don’t live up to your full potential or enjoy the life you could.

Pushing the boundaries

Being prepared to step outside the comfort zone offers a series of benefits that tend to compound.

Firstly, pushing the boundaries and stretching our abilities is what keeps us moving forward.

When we are moving forward, we gain confidence. When we gain confidence, things become easier, and when things become easier, we become more disciplined.

Ultimately, when we are more disciplined, we allow the law of compounding to work for us.

What do I mean by that? Well, the confidence and discipline we employ becomes a habit that allows us to build on results over time, meaning next year will be better than this year, this year is better than last, and last year is better than the year before.

Over time, this compounding exponentially increases our results. The formula is universal. It applies in both our business and personal lives.

Be prepared to get uncomfortable

Nothing happens if we are not prepared to get uncomfortable. And uncomfortable can look like different things to different people, but it’s all about tackling the tasks and activities that are challenging or perhaps we tend to put off.

For agents, uncomfortable might involve embracing and participating in a weekly team “role play” session. It’s about breaking the fear or embarrassment that we might fumble through our dialogue.

Uncomfortable is not snoozing the alarm and instead getting to the gym in a bid to be healthy, balanced and focused.

Uncomfortable is having critical conversations with our sellers and buyers, despite the fact they are not easy discussions to have.

Uncomfortable is reconciling our finances and budgets, even if numbers aren’t your forte, and even if those finances aren’t what you would like them to be.

Uncomfortable is making 20 daily cold call connections. It’s about facing the fear of rejection and instead picking up the phone at a non-negotiable time, without fail.

Uncomfortable is investing time in reviewing and perfecting our processes. It’s about eliminating the variations and leaving nothing to chance.

Uncomfortable is breaking through the procrastination barrier and just getting things done. It’s about doing the things we need to do even when we’re not in that frame of mind and even when there’s a risk we might fail.

And the result of this discomfort? Well it’s about learning, growing, and ultimately gaining confidence while instilling the discipline that creates habits which compound over time.

Now’s the time

The new financial year is almost upon us. There’s never been a better time to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Embrace that feeling of unease that comes from stepping beyond your personal comfort zone. Make uncomfortable part of your daily ritual.

I guarantee you’ll be surprised how comfortable you will soon become beyond your comfort zone, and ultimately you will thank yourself for the results it will help you achieve.
