It’s easy to get derailed, to find yourself frustrated and unmotivated or, as I recently talked about, stuck and unsure of how to summon the drive to do what you need to do.

That’s human, it’s natural, and in those moments it’s essential not to be too hard on ourselves.

Everyday life has its ups and downs, highs and lows, plateaus, and roller-coaster rides. Everyone experiences them and no one can avoid them. That’s just life!

However, as challenging as it can get and as unmotivated as we may feel, we all need the ability to hit the reset button. There is absolutely no point or reason to remain immobilised in the “stuck” mode.

We cannot always be “on”, but we can and must limit and eliminate the negative self-talk. We must also develop the skills to quickly shift ourselves from that negative state to a mindset that allows us to take action.

The mindset of high achievers

The importance of having the skill to change our state of mind is something that well-known coach, author and speaker Tony Robbins discusses at length.

Robbins, and more specifically this interview on the Mindset of High Achievers, are my go-to when it comes to summoning the ability to change my state of mind.

It’s a reinforcement and reminder that we have total control over everything, and that our attitude towards what happens is far more important than what happens to us.

Here’s an insight into what he says and how it can help you quickly shift from stuck and unmotivated to inspired, decisive and sure of what to do next.

We are guided by our state

Robbins explains that moment to moment, we are guided by our state. Knowing how to genuinely change that state is one of the most fundamental skills we can learn in life.

Discovering how to go from frustrated, disappointed, angry, or unmotivated to a positive state, such as creative, determined, and innovative is the thing that moves us forward.

Our lives are controlled by one force

Robbins goes on to note our lives are controlled by one force: decisions. We are given the power to make choices.

“The decisions we make control us much more than the conditions we meet,” he argues.

“It’s not the conditions, it’s your decisions.”

It’s our individual decision what to believe, what to do, what to give, but the most important decision we make is deciding that no matter what happens, we can live in a beautiful state.

It’s the decision to say, “I am not going to suffer”, whether that suffering comes as worry, anger, frustration, or anything that takes us out of a positive state of mind.

We can make the decision to end that suffering, he says, by shifting the focus from one’s self to something greater, whether that’s our family, our mission, or our life.

Life is short, he argues, so why spend it suffering, worrying, and comparing yourself to others, and why seek fulfilment, approval, and happiness from the people around us?

If we rely on other people behaving a certain way to make us happy, we will always be unhappy.

Instead, we can decide that no matter what happens, we can live in a beautiful state. More importantly, why shouldn’t that moment be now? Why not be happy today, why not find wealth in this moment, and value in this second right now?

You can find that interview with Tony Robbins on YouTube, and I strongly recommend you watch it.

There’s far more in it than what I’ve covered here, including a fascinating insight into the six things that every human needs and the importance of having the right priorities in order to achieve real fulfilment.

So set aside some uninterrupted time, take out your journal and jot down notes. It might just shift your perspective and provide the skill set required to change your state of mind.
