The findings of the institute-led taskforce will “form the basis” for the 2025 Australasian Auctioneering Championship (AUSTROS) guidelines and guide future iterations of the competition.
Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president Leanne Pilkington described the review of the event as a “major step towards enhancing the competition’s role and effectiveness in the real estate markets of Australia and New Zealand”.
“The primary aim of this review is to ensure that AUSTROS continues to support the development of auctioneering as a transparent and effective sales method,” said Pilkington.
With the review set to examine the financial viability of the event’s delivery and logistics and explore “opportunities for broader scope and increased promotion”, Pilkington relayed the taskforce’s findings will “form the basis” for the 2025 AUSTROS guidelines.
“The competition is renowned for showcasing top talent from across both nations, and the review seeks to uphold this standard while exploring ways to enhance its appeal and impact,” she explained.
“The goal is to maintain AUSTROS as a distinguished competition for members of the national bodies, appealing to both seasoned and emerging auctioneers.”
Pilkington detailed that the taskforce would seek to unify the “format and structure of AUSTROS and its feeder events” and ensure consistency across all stages of the competition, with the qualification process one particular focus area.
The taskforce is set to evaluate whether the allocation of spots for each Australian state and New Zealand ensures sufficient “diversity and competitiveness” within the greater AUSTROS competition.
“As the taskforce begins its work, this review represents a crucial step in reinforcing AUSTROS’s role in promoting excellence and innovation within the auctioneering profession,” the president concluded.
The taskforce is set to meet on Monday, 26 August 2024, and will be comprised of:
Alec Brown - REIACT; Ricky Briggs - REINSW; Michelle Tynan - REIT; Matt Smith - REISA; Andrea Heading (observer) - REISA; Harry Li - REIV; Boyd Fraser - REIWA; Mark Sumich - REINZ; Jen Baird - REINZ CEO; Victoria Peisley - REIA business manager; and secretariat Charlotte van der Walle.
