Following Anna Neelagama’s resignation, the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) is searching for a new captain to steer the ship.
According to institute president Leanne Pilkington, the Canberra-based role will be “a rare opportunity to lead a national industry body at a time of significant change in the real estate sector”.
The REIA, which boasts a total membership of over 46,000 real estate businesses, aims to double down on leadership and advocacy ahead of the May 2025 federal election.
“The new CEO will be at the forefront to ensure that member real estate institutes and the professional interests of real estate practitioners are well served at a federal level as Australia’s housing supply shortage continues,” said Pilkington.
According to the president, the REIA is looking for “a politically and commercially savvy leader” with a deep awareness of the challenges faced by the real estate sector.
“The board of the Real Estate Institute of Australia has identified that the ideal candidate will be a strong advocate, capable of engaging with government officials and other key stakeholders to advance the interests of REIA members,” Pilkington said.
“In addition to a proven track record of leadership, the CEO must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and possess the analytical and financial acumen necessary to manage the organisation effectively.”
The nationwide search for a new CEO follows the exit of Anna Neelagama from the role in early August 2024, after four years at the helm.
Neelagama has moved to Master Builders ACT, where she has been appointed CEO.
Pilkington praised Neelagama’s work in raising “the professionalism and image of REIA across the board” and for ensuring that “politicians of all colours and government agencies are clear on the drivers of the current housing crisis”.
“While we are sad to say farewell to Anna, we are delighted she will remain in the housing space contributing to the critical national issue of housing supply and affordability,” the REIA president said.
