The state has launched the next round of its regional housing fund aimed at speeding up the delivery of new housing across regional NSW.
The NSW government has opened the submissions process for the third round of its Regional Housing Strategic Planning Fund which will enable regional councils to receive a portion of $3 million in funding to deliver strategically located and affordable housing.
From today, regional councils will be able to apply for between $20,000 and $250,000 in funds to implement new housing strategies, develop infrastructure and servicing plans, and incorporate local planning amendments to increase affordable housing supply.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, encouraged councils from across the state to apply, noting that the “housing crisis is hitting regional communities just as hard as it is hitting Sydney”. He emphasised the government wants to make sure that councils “have the resources to plan for and deliver more homes in all parts of the state”.
“As regional communities grow and evolve, this funding will help deliver the important planning work needed to boost housing supply, affordability, and diversity,” he said.
Since the initiative’s launch in August 2022, the NSW government has invested $6.88 million in 36 projects across regional NSW to accelerate housing supply and assist regional NSW in reaching its housing target of 55,000 homes as part of the broader National Housing Accord.
The program’s first round funded 20 projects across 19 councils which supported the delivery of 40,000 homes. Projects included Homes NSW’s sub-precincts master plan delivering affordable housing in Port Stephens, supported by a $107,400 grant.
Across the second round, $2.9 million was apportioned to 16 councils to support the construction of nearly 23,800 homes, with $230,000 being allotted to Federation Council to execute a stormwater-servicing plan supporting 5,600 homes across the Murray region.
The application window for the fund’s third round will close on 22 November 2024, with submissions set to be assessed by an independent panel using a published criteria.
Speaking on the program, Minister for Regional NSW and Western NSW, Tara Moriarty, encouraged councils to “apply and help us unlock the delivery of thousands of new regional homes sooner”.
“This funding will support more homes, which means more jobs and better communities in regional NSW,” she added.
