A series of new housing projects will seek to increase housing supply across south-east Queensland, with an emphasis on reducing housing stress for renters, first home buyers and “vulnerable Queenslanders”.

The federal government has announced new housing initiatives which will provide more than 1,000 new homes for south-east Queensland, and come as part of the government’s $32 billion Homes for Australia plan to address the acute housing shortages faced by Australians.

“The only way to get more houses is to build them, that’s exactly what we’re focused on delivering as quickly as possible,” said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“These homes will be more than just four walls and a roof. They will be places where families take their first day of school photos, celebrate birthdays and make their own cherished memories,” he said.

The federal government announced it will provide $40 million to Queensland through the Housing Support Program, which will fund the development of 500 new homes and the necessary water, sewerage and power infrastructure in Meadowbrook.

“The best way to solve the housing crisis is with more supply. Our investment will mean that the site for 500 new homes in Meadowbrook can be approved in 12 weeks, rather than 12 months so families in our growing community can get into a home much sooner,” said Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

A partnership between the federal and Queensland governments, alongside the Australian Retirement Trust, will also provide over 600 social, affordable and rental homes across seven sites in and around Brisbane.

Through this collaboration, Housing Australia will contribute $300 million, the Queensland government will provide $405 million, and the Australian Retirement Trust will allocate $150 million towards the housing projects.

The Brisbane Housing Company will be responsible for overseeing the development of these houses, with construction currently underway at Redcliffe, Stones Corner and the two sites at Chermside, and building due to begin next year in Toowoomba, Woolloongabba and Southport.

These projects will comprise a mixture of studio, one- and two-bedroom units that will number “285 social, 294 affordable, and 25 market rental homes” across the seven sites.

The government stated that “single women with children, young people, Indigenous Australians and tenants aged 55+” will receive priority for social housing, while key workers will be given precedence for the affordable units.

Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Clare O’Neil, emphasised that the “projects are all about reducing housing stress for renters, first home buyers and our most vulnerable Queenslanders”.

“These 1,000 homes across south-east Queensland build on the 490 social and affordable homes announced in Cairns last month and show that the Commonwealth government is back in the game of delivering homes right across Queensland,” she said.
