Why you’re not achieving what you want

It’s easy to point the finger when we get frustrated at the fact we’re not achieving the things we want.

We’ve all been there, blaming others or things outside our control or the fact we can’t quite reach our goals.

But as the great old saying goes, when you point your finger at someone else, three fingers point back at you.

Like it or not, that adage is absolutely true. It’s all on us. There’s no excuse. We have to do the work.

We all know it all comes down to personal responsibility and dedication. But are we putting in the effort and time to learn and grow?

Are you doing enough?

If we’re not achieving our goals in our real estate career, health or relationships, then chances are it’s because we are not doing enough.

As agents, if we’re not achieving our sales goals, we are not training enough, prospecting enough, networking enough or putting in the time required.

If we’re not achieving our health goals, there’s a good chance we’re not moving enough, we’re eating too much, we’re not taking the time to do the exercise needed. We are not focused enough on our health regime and learning what it is we should be doing.

If we’re not working on our relationships, it’s because we’re not taking the time for them. We’re not curious enough about how the people around us feel and think, we’re not invested enough, and we’re not communicating as we should.

It’s not a lack of knowledge

The thing is, none of this comes down to a lack of knowledge. In real estate, health and your relationships, you know what you should be doing to achieve success.

If you don’t know, you have the capacity to learn what’s needed to achieve your goal.

We have access to so much information and training in both our personal and professional lives, so lack of knowledge is never a valid excuse.

The real problem comes down to bridging the gap between the knowing and the doing. We have to do the work to bridge that gap. And when we do, the results speak for themselves.

You need structure

So, if it’s got nothing to do with not knowing and everything to do with not doing, how exactly do we ensure we do what needs to be done?

Well that comes down to structure and strategies. We need to put structure and strategies in place to ensure the doing becomes second nature. Then we need to determine the actions required and implement a follow-through process.

Let me repeat that again succinctly:

  • You know what you need to be doing (if you don’t know, you have the capacity and access to resources to learn).
  • Determine the structure and strategies required to get the job done.
  • Drill down into the activities needed to get to your goal.
  • Have a follow-through process to ensure you are actually doing what you say you will.

It’s all about self discipline

One of my favourite quotes is the following: “Self-discipline. The superpower which makes you do what you don’t feel like doing.”

If the gap lies between “the knowing” and “the doing”, then self-discipline is the bridge that overcomes that chasm.

That self-discipline rests on foundations of structure, strategies, actions and follow-through I talked about a little earlier.

Now or never

As we head towards the end of the year, now is the time to start setting ourselves up for success in the 12 months ahead.

This is the time to make decisions that set the right foundations for the year to come.

Oh, and if you’re looking for some great resources to increase your knowledge base, here are seven incredible books:

  • Tribe of Mentors by Timothy Ferriss
  • The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett
  • 12 Rules of Life by Jordan Peterson
  • The Little Big Things by Tom Peters
  • Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo
  • Sell Like Crazy by Sabri Suby

If we are not achieving what we want, it’s not because of a lack of information; it’s because of a lack of investment.

You have the knowledge. There’s no excuse. Now get the foundations right, and instil the self-discipline to bridge the gap between the knowing and the doing.
