How much do you want it?

We’re just days into a new year and with any luck the return to work sees you feeling rested, reinvigorated and ready to go.

Chances are, you also have some resolutions up your sleeve about what you hope to achieve in 2025 and how you plan to attain those goals.

But quick question, how much do you actually want that success? A bit? A lot? Or is it as vital to you as the very air you breathe?

Like your life depends on it

When it comes to the concept of success, motivational businessman Eric Thomas once famously stated: “You need to want it as much as you want to breathe.”

Now that statement might sound a little extreme, but there’s also truth to it.

If you want success, it can’t just be something you’ll get around to. It’s not something you can take or leave, worry about later, or set aside while you get busy engaging in mundane habits and mindless routines.

If you really want success, you must have the ambition to achieve it. You need to have drive and a burning, relentless desire to attain that goal.

Because, without that drive, passion and hunger in the belly, you’re not going to do the activity required to get you to that success.

It starts now

That hunger and drive start now. It all begins at the start of the year when we have a fresh perspective and resolve about what we hope to achieve.

Too often, however, the challenge becomes maintaining that drive.

You see a funny thing frequently happens at the start of a new year. Despite our best intentions, we come back to work, settle into the same familiar environment and lapse back into a regular routine.

Without even realising it, we renege on our new year’s resolutions and settle into another groundhog year.

We let the big picture fall by the wayside and lapse into the comfortable, familiar zone of doing what we’ve always done.

It doesn’t have to be Groundhog Day

It doesn’t have to be like that. Falling back into old habits isn’t inevitable. But combatting it will require you to go “all in”.

If you want success, give it the priority it deserves. Kindle that burning, unstoppable desire.

Envisage that success and keep it at the front of your mind each day, driving every single action you take and every little thing that you do.

An interesting phenomenon occurs when you embrace this success-first perspective. The activities you need to do become crystal clear. The extraneous actions that cost you time and effort are suddenly set aside.

You become laser-focused and absolutely single minded about your priorities for now and the immediate future.

This clarity then allows you to keep pushing forward and do the work even when you don’t feel like it. It underpins the discipline that’s required to get the job done.

But first you need to want that success, not just a little bit, but a lot, and like your life depends on it. Because when you really, really want something, you can and will make it happen.
