Despite Christmas traditionally seen as a quiet period for property agents, Melbourne and Sydney continued to perform well, achieving clearance rates above 65 per cent.

In Melbourne, 607 properties were listed for sale, significantly up on the 171 listed this time last year.

Although the auction clearance rate was down slightly on last week, the capital city still managed to achieve a solid 69.9 per cent clearance.

A four bedroom house in Buff Point was the cheapest property, bought over the weekend for $195,000.

The clearance rates in Adelaide and Brisbane remained fairly consistent with previous weeks.

Adelaide achieved a 42.9 per cent clearance rate, while 30.4 per cent of the properties in Brisbane were cleared over the weekend.
