The Property Council of Australia has welcomed an independent review of Australia’s capital cities by KPMG.
“The report by KMPG shows that the performance of our capital cities is critical if we are to turbo-charge Australia’s nation-building agenda,” the Council’s chief executive officer Peter Verwer said.
However, while Mr Verwer applauded COAG’s commitment to improve capital city planning systems, he said the reality does not yet match the Council’s vision for the future.
“If we can lift the performance of our major capital cities, then we will lift the performance of our economy and create more liveable and sustainable communities,” he said.
Mr Verwer said the federal government should more actively engage in the nation’s cities by combining the population policy portfolio with urban affairs and re-launch a ‘Better Cities’ infrastructure program.
“Nation-building policies for the future cannot ignore our cities, which are key drivers of economic growth, employment and prosperity."
The KPMG audit report was commissioned for the Built Environment Meets Parliament (BEMP) alliance, a combination of leading property industry groups including Consult Australia, the Australian Institute of Architects, the Green Building Council of Australia, the Planning Institute of Australia and the Property Council of Australia.
