Making news this week, The West Australian reported that a real estate agent was fined $1000 in Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday for lying to investors.
Former agent Thomas Haynes pleaded guilty to breaching the NSW Fair Trading legislation, when he made false representations to clients over land purchases, causing them to cancel the contract.
At the time, Mr Haynes was working for a subsidiary company of Westpoint and attempted to on-sell the rejected properties for profit.
Haynes, who initially pleaded not guilty before changing his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial, asked for a spent conviction as he is trying to get a real estate agent licence in Victoria. Spent conviction schemes are designed to give people a second chance to live down a minor criminal conviction, because they have the capacity to reform their ways.
His application for a spent conviction was refused.
