The Housing Industry Association of Australia has slammed the federal government’s proposed carbon tax, labelling it a waste of time.
According to HIA managing director Shane Goodwin, the federal government’s legislation fails to consider the growing cost of housing.
Mr Goodwin said the cost of new housing construction is set to rise substantially under the federal government’s proposed introduction of carbon tax, placing further strain on families.
While the federal government has announced compensation will be given to households to combat the growing costs of energy, Mr Goodwin said little efforts have been made to assist families buying a home.
“We are disappointed that no announcement has yet been made concerning the biggest expenditure item for all households, their own home,” he said.
“Affordability is at an all-time low and the gap is widening. The cost of new housing would rise substantially under the proposed carbon tax and adequate compensation is imperative.”
