Spruiking a property’s ‘green’ credentials has helped deliver a Canberra-based real estate agency the 2011 Telstra ACT Business of the Year.

Luton Properties, a privately owned real estate agency in Canberra, focuses on environmental sustainability by encouraging vendors to “green” their homes before sale. It does this by giving advice on home energy audits.

The company, which has 80 staff across seven offices in the ACT, attributes this strategy for helping them win not only the Telstra award but a number of others, including the Real Estate Institute of Australia’s Excellence Award for Innovation and the Panasonic Australia Medium Business Award.

Luton Properties director Richard Luton said his business had a deliberate market penetration strategy of opening local offices to counter the domination of national agencies.

“We have learnt that we need to grow steadily and to make sure that we don’t lose sight of our original company values and vision, maintaining integrity and ensuring proactive regular contact with our clients,” Mr Luton said.
