A Sydney property manager has been charged in connection with a match-fixing probe into a National Rugby League (NRL) game from last year, a newspaper has reported.
Coogee-based property manager Greg Tait was reported by Sydney's Daily Telegraph to have been charged by police on two counts of attempting to dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.
NSW Police confirmed that they had arrested and charged a 38-year-old man yesterday as part of their inquiries into alleged illegal betting activity surrounding the 2010 Round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and Cowboys.
Alex Udler, the agency's principal, told Real Estate Business today that he would be meeting with Mr Tait this morning to discuss the issue. Mr Udler stressed that Mr Tait had not been found guilty of anything as yet, and he praised the 20-year property management veteran for his strong work ethic.
"He's an unbelievable worker," Mr Udler said. "I would have ten of him if I could."
Mr Tait was the fourth man charged as part of Strike Force Suburb, which was established by State Crime Command’s Casino and Racing Investigation Unit to investigate the matter.
One of those already charged was former Bulldogs player Ryan Tandy, who had previously rented a Bronte-based apartment through Mr Tait's agency, the Daily Telegraph said.
NSW Police, who would only refer to the "Maroubra man", was conditionally bailed to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on 25 August.
"Police will allege the man placed a number of bets on the first scoring option for that match," the NSW Police said. "It will also be alleged he arranged for a woman in New Zealand to place bets on the same scoring option on his behalf."
