Young real estate agents are rapidly becoming disillusioned with the industry, according to one of the industry’s biggest names.

Speaking with Real Estate Business, Matt Steinwede, director and business owner at McGrath Estate Agents revealed his concern that many young agents have unrealistic expectations of the industry.

“When agents see some of the top guys, they don’t see the hard work and dedication that they have had to endure for years before they have reached this point,” he said.

“Starting out young, new agents don’t have the benefit of having a strong market presence.

“This is something you have to work on for at least three years, but more realistically, five before you see results. It doesn’t happen overnight and agents need to realise this early."

According to Mr Steinwede, young agents should consider their first few years in the industry in the same way they see saving money in a bank account.

“You need to make deposits into your bank of knowledge,” he explained.

“After many years, you will begin to see the knowledge pile up and turn into results.”

Mr Steinwede will be addressing the crowd at the next Young Real Estate Professionals (YREP) event, where he will be discussing the importance of staying goal focused as a young agent.

According to YREP co-organiser Rob Forde, CEO of Harcourts Corporate NSW, Mr Steinwede is a perfect speaker for the event.

“I think he has had quite a diverse career and I think his story will resonate really well in the room,” Mr Forde told Real Estate Business.

“He has actually proven himself as a top agent and he has evolved his business - with his life and the industry - and I think people will take a lot from that.”

The second YREP networking event will take place this Thursday 12 September at the Ivy Penthouse in Sydney’s CBD. Complimentary drinks and canapés will be served.

The networking group is open to all property managers and agents in NSW.

According to Mr Forde, there are limited spots still available at the second event, so register now. For more information and to register, visit YREP.
