A 35-year industry veteran has been elected as the president of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW).

Malcolm Gunning was voted into the position at last Friday’s annual general meeting (AGM) and will hold it for a two-year term.

REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin said Mr Gunning’s major strength was his extensive experience across all areas of the profession.

“Malcolm first started in real estate in 1975,” Mr McKibbin said. “From residential to commercial and franchise to independent agencies, his knowledge is second to none and we are delighted by his election as president.”

With over 20 years as principal of Gunning Commercial, Mr Gunning became a partner in Richardson&Wrench Surry Hills/Redfern earlier this year, after the Gunning group recognised the opportunity to diversify the business model to include a residential agency.

“Over the course of my career, I’ve worked in most areas of real estate, and now own both an independent commercial agency and a residential franchise agency,” Mr Gunning said.

“I’ve worked for large companies and small companies, operated as a franchisor and a franchisee, been a valuer, sat as a director of a publicly listed company, and for the last 20 years I’ve been an owner-operator,” he said.

Elected to the board of directors in 2007, Mr Gunning became deputy president in 2011.

“I understand the challenges our members face in their day-to-day practice because I face them too – and I look forward to drawing on all my experience in my capacity as REINSW president," he said.

“My goal is to ensure REINSW is relevant to its members by being the industry voice with the NSW and federal governments, and to provide meaningful services, forms and training.”

Mr McKibbin paid tribute to outgoing president Christian Payne, who will remain on the REINSW board.

“Christian has played a key role in the positioning of REINSW as the leading industry body for the real estate profession. He helped oversee the introduction of our five-year strategic plan for REINSW and mandatory professional indemnity insurance after many years of lobbying,” Mr McKibbin said.
