A teenager has taken the crown as New South Wales’ top novice auctioneer at a recent state-based competition.

LJ Hooker Concord's Alex Pattaro was named the winner at the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales’ (REINSW) Novice Auctioneers Competition State Final held last month.

The annual event is open to entrants over 16 who live in NSW and have not completed more than 10 auctions, or who have no more than six months' experience as a livestock or chattel auctioneer.

REINSW deputy president John Cunningham said the 17 year-old agent had captivated the audience with his confident approach.

“Alex’s description and sale of Santa’s Sack, which came complete with a Christmas ham and the chance to win a truckload of cash, was outstanding,” he said.

“The competition is a great way for young auctioneers to be recognised for their skills, while raising funds for charity.

“This year’s event saw more than $46,000 raised during the course of the competition.”

Mr Pattaro told Real Estate Business winning the competition was an achievement and a good experience for him.

Earlier this year, the budding auctioneer had placed second in LJ Hooker’s Auction Icon competition, but described the REINSW event as being far more challenging.

“The intensity was a lot higher and the stakes were a lot higher," he said. "The people you’re auctioning up against are tougher and there’s a lot more pressure because it’s state-wide.”

Mr Pattaro said he prepared for the competition by practising regularly and critiquing his techniques.
