The real estate industry is responsible for a high volume of landfill each year, but one agency has found a new way to dispose of used signboards.
CEO of Starr Partners Doug Driscoll said while offices may have implemented internal procedures for recycling, the brunt of the impact from the real estate sector carbon footprint comes from signboards.
“As an industry, we are culpable for a high volume of landfill each year and have an obligation to control what we waste,” Mr Driscoll said.
Starr Partners has introduced a sustainability program that turns property signage boards into high-quality promotional materials, including reusable shopping bags.
“Many agents are discouraged by the costs involved with recycling programs. However, the obvious benefits in regards to corporate responsibility and brand perception are more than worth the investment," he said.
“Also, as more agencies begin to invest in recycling, associated costs will naturally decline.”
According to Mr Driscoll, each year more than 655,000 tonnes of recyclable materials are sent to landfill from small and medium businesses in Sydney alone.
"While many industries appear to be ahead of the game in regards to operating in a ‘green’ environment, there is an apparent delay in real estate businesses implementing recycling opportunities," he said.
