Aiming to offer a professional boost to property managers who aspire to “advance their careers,” the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is leading a new initiative.

The Property Manager Job Ready Scholarship, launched by the institute in partnership with Smoke Alarm Solutions, gives property managers a chance to receive $1,500 in financial assistance to cover the cost of undertaking REIQ’s PM Job Ready Program.

Specifically designed for those who have completed a registration or Full Licence course, cohorts in the program will receive two days of face-to-face content from REIQ’s senior trainers as well as an additional six months of access to a specialised online program.

According to REIQ, the scholarship is an “incredible opportunity” for property managers who want to further their careers by upskilling and bolstering their knowledge in the residential property management space.

“Completing the program will give them a competitive edge in the industry,” the institute said.

For Smoke Alarm Solution, sponsoring the scholarship for one chosen recipient is their “way of giving back to the property management community.

They acknowledged that being a property manager is a “demanding job”, especially in the current rental market, and involves managing properties and balancing landlord and tenant relationships.

Michelle Parsons, the chief operating officer of Smoke Alarm Solutions, stated that the smoke alarm compliance services provider collaborates with property managers on a daily basis and has a good understanding of the pressures they are under in the current market.

“We know it is a stressful time for Queensland property managers. Vacancy rates are the lowest we have ever seen, all whilst turnover of property managers is at an all-time high,” she stated.

The latest data from REIQ showed the Sunshine State is still struggling with “obscenely tight rental conditions”, as vacancy rates in the region stood at 0.9 per cent in the March 2023 quarter, still significantly below the ideal 2.6 to 3.5 per cent healthy rate.

The company is optimistic that property managers will greatly benefit from the additional guidance and training provided by the experts at REIQ, as it will equip them with the necessary confidence and knowledge to effectively navigate the challenges in their industry.

“We want to give back to the industry by offering a fully paid training scholarship to a property manager who is wanting to further their skills to ensure their growth and longevity in the industry,” Ms Parsons stated.

The program is now open for applications from Queensland-based property managers with a Real Estate Registration or Full Licence, with the winner chosen at random and announced on 15 May.
