It’s no secret real estate can be a competitive industry. It can also be lonely, especially if you’re at the helm of an independent agency where the buck stops with you.

That’s where a network of peers becomes invaluable. It offers a safe space where you can gauge the market, collectively problem-solve, and embrace best practice when it comes to navigating the highs and lows of an ever evolving industry where technology is playing an increasing tole.

So, what benefits are there to having a network, and how can you create one that challenges the common misconception that real estate’s an industry where it’s every professional for themselves?

The benefits of a network

Whether it’s a social group, a business network or a trusted troupe of mentors and peers, having a group of people around you to share the journey with and support you is invaluable in this career.

After all, this can be an industry of thrilling highs and intense lows. There’s the challenge of constantly building your profile and pipeline, there’s market shifts, emerging technology, increasing client expectations, occasional rejection and a tendency for agents, property managers and agency owners to fall into the trap of being ‘on’ 24/7.

Having a network of support people around you keeps you tethered to reality, allowing you to ride the waves in the knowledge you’re not alone, there is a life raft, and there are many others in the same boat.

So, let’s break down the benefits of a network and how it can help shape your real estate career.

Accountability

Regardless of whether you’re an agent within a major brand, an independent operator or an agency owner, real estate is a career that requires you to be self-driven and proactive.

That level of drive can be difficult to sustain, particularly when the market is changing or things aren’t quite going to plan.

Having a network helps create the accountability required, pushing you to set goals and stay on track.

Best practice

Like any industry, real estate is one that evolves with new techniques and best practice concepts emerging.

A solid network of industry professionals allows you tap into the latest and most effective strategies that help you stay at the top of your game.

It helps you identify what’s worked and what hasn’t for others who have walked this path before you, eliminating unnecessary mistakes and saving you time and effort as you nurture a successful career.

Tech nous

Technology is revolutionising this industry with new tools emerging at a rate that beggars belief, but with that is a potential sense of tech overwhelm and ‘latest, greatest’ gadget fatigue.

With a network by your side, you can gain insight into the tech that offers real benefits when it comes to building your business and scaling your career.

Problem solving

As proven during Covid and the GFC, real estate isn’t an industry that operates in isolation. It is impacted by a range of factors, including the economy, monetary policy, government legislation and more.

Having trusted and experienced professionals around you enables collaborative problem-solving. It helps you navigate the highs and lows as a group that can share their experiences and glean insight into the best path forward.

Training

If you want to be great at real estate, you need to continually ‘sharpen the saw’. You need training, mentoring and access to the best in the business.

Whether its honing that listing presentation, nailing your social media strategy, or practicing your elevator pitch to gain confidence, being part of group and individual training via a network of professionals can set you up for continued success, no matter what stage you are at in your career.

Unexpected opportunities

When you’re part of a network, a wealth of incredible opportunities can suddenly reveal themselves, whether it’s a new job, the next step or a career turn you never expected.

How to create your network

Regardless of what agency you’re with, or what brand you fall under there are a multitude of ways o build an effective network that supports you both personally and professionally.

And it’s something I’d urge every real estate professional to consider, especially those in the early stages of their career.

If you’re seeking to build an effective network, consider the following:

Mentors

The great thing about real estate is that, contrary to popular belief, this is an industry where many experienced operators are more than willing to share their expertise.

Whether it’s someone you admire personally or someone with a wealth of experience who has attained success, seek out mentors to guide you and learn from.

This can be as simple as reaching out to them in person or following them on social media, but great personal and professional mentors can be a game-changer for your wellbeing and career.

Accountability buddies

This won’t be a new concept for many of you, but finding a suitable accountability buddy can be a great way to establish ongoing momentum when it comes to setting and achieving professional goals.

This might be someone within your office or a trusted person beyond it, but either way the aim is to help each other stay accountable to your routine activities and aims.

Industry events and coaching

From annual conferences to industry association events, the real estate profession has no shortage of events, coaches and training opportunities.

Embrace them as both an opportunity to learn and the chance to build your network.
