The state’s latest build-to-rent project will deliver “much-needed housing supply and security” for renters in the South Coast region of NSW.
The NSW government’s developer Landcom has inked a deal with Zauner Construction Pty Ltd to deliver the construction of 60 new homes within the suburb of Bomaderry in the City of Shoalhaven.
This initiative is part of the state’s broader build-to-rent (BTR) initiative and will deliver 48 new homes in Bomaderry that will be provided at market rates for long-term rental, while the remaining 12 will be reserved for affordable housing for households on “low to moderate incomes”.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, commented that the program is “boosting housing supply in areas where we know people are struggling with the rising cost of rent” and will “provide a boost to jobs and the local economy in the Shoalhaven region”.
“From the regions to our city centres, the NSW government is getting on with the job of delivering more affordable, well-built and connected homes to those that need it,” Scully said.
The building efforts undertaken by Zauner Construction will reportedly follow “best practice sustainable design” guidelines that will enable the company to maximise energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a healthy environment that gives residents with fresh air and natural light.
The finished apartments will consist of a variety of sizes to suit the “needs, lifestyles and budgets” of the local community, and are additionally located close to the Bomaderry railway station and nearby shops, public open spaces, and other lifestyle amenities.
The NSW government stated that construction efforts for the Bomaderry developments will begin in the coming months and will take around 18 months to complete, with future residents currently expected to move into the apartments by late 2026.
Commenting on the Bomaderry developments, Member for South Coast, Liza Butler, emphasised that “long-term, secure rental housing is important now, more than ever”.
“The injection of housing is welcome news and will be of great benefit to many families in the area. It is developments such as this that has been the missing link for Bomaderry and the South Coast,” Butler said.
In addition to the homes at Bomaderry, Landcom is also leading the development of 50 new apartments in the Northern Rivers as part of its BTR program in regional NSW.
This announcement also follows the recent unveiling of the NSW government’s plan to transform the former WestConnex dive site at Camperdown into 500 new apartments, including 200 BTR units offering discounted rents for essential workers.
